Disney World, SeaWorld, and Why Family-Friendly Destinations Are DINK Heaven

Disney World, SeaWorld, and Why Family-Friendly Destinations Are DINK Heaven

EPCOT! Enjoying one of our favorite places during the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival

Episode 19 of Marrying Your Passions: The DINK Travel and Adventure

If you have ever walked into Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom without a stroller, a nap schedule, or a meltdown in progress, you know exactly what we are talking about. There is a specific kind of freedom that comes with experiencing these places as a DINK couple, and it is one of our favorite things to talk about.

In Episode 19 of Marrying Your Passions, married DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) couple Nathan and Alicia make the case for family-friendly destinations, specifically Walt Disney World and SeaWorld Orlando, and share everything they have learned from years of visiting both as a child-free couple. This post goes deeper on all of it so you can take notes, follow the links, and start planning your own version.

It Is Not About Absence. It Is About Abundance.

All you care to eat breakfast at 'Ohana with Stitch!

The framing matters. We are not surviving these parks. We are thriving in them. Kids at Disney World and SeaWorld are part of the charm, not an obstacle. A child seeing something magical for the first time is genuinely wonderful to witness and that energy is part of what makes these places special.

Our mindset is never "ugh, kids everywhere." It is always "look what we get to do." These parks help us unwind, connect us to our own childhoods, and give us the freedom to experience them exactly the way we want. No compromises, no schedules, no rushing past the things we actually love.

And yes, Disney adults are a thing. We are somewhere in the middle of that conversation. We love Disney the way we love a great restaurant or a beautiful hotel: because it delivers an exceptional experience every single time. It is not our identity. It is our happy place. And doing an episode about why adults without kids absolutely belong at Disney is in some ways a statement all by itself.

Why We Love Disney: Nostalgia, Hospitality, and the Riviera Resort

Watching the Festival of the Lion King at Animal Kingdom Park brings all the feel for these 90's kids!

The nostalgia runs deep for both of us. For Nathan, Disney connects to growing up as an older millennial during the golden era of Disney films: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King. For Alicia, Disney is literally woven into her childhood. Her mom moved to Orlando in the early 80s and was part of the cast that opened EPCOT. Alicia grew up going to Disney World with family, on school field trips, and whenever anyone visited from out of town. Two completely different paths to the same deep love.

But it goes beyond nostalgia. Disney's hospitality is genuinely exceptional. The attention to detail, the cast members, the way every inch of every property is maintained. That level of care is rare and it never gets old.

Our Disney Vacation Club (DVC) home resort is the Riviera Resort and to us it is the definition of DINK heaven. The theming is elevated and sophisticated rather than loud and over the top. The restaurants are fantastic. The pool is beautifully themed without being designed entirely for children. The Skyliner connects you to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios effortlessly. Even the scent when you walk through the front doors is its own kind of magic. A full Riviera episode is coming but if you are a DINK looking for a Disney resort that feels made for you, start there.

The DINK Superpower: Switching Resorts Mid-Stay

This is one of our favorite Disney moves and it is genuinely easier without kids in tow. Disney will transfer your luggage from one resort to another while you enjoy the day. You drop your bags with bell services, head to the next resort, and your luggage is waiting when you arrive.

Nathan playing the scavenger hunt and finding, Max at The Yacht Club.

We have done this multiple times. The first was planned: Alicia hosts a large statewide conference at the Yacht Club and Beach Club each year and Disney comps her stay because of the significant business she brings to the property. We had a gap night before our Riviera stay so we booked one DVC night at the Boardwalk and seamlessly moved between three resorts in three nights.

Then there was the whim. Last summer we realized mid-stay we had no reason to rush home. We got on the DVC website, found a room at the Contemporary Bay Lake Tower, booked it on the spot, and loved every minute of it. The Top of the World Lounge - Villain's Lair there is amazing. The food and the views of the Magic Kingdom fireworks show is a one of a kind experience! Coming up at the end of May we are doing it again: Animal Kingdom Lodge for Alicia's work night, then Saratoga Springs on DVC points.

The Top of the World Lounge - Villain's Lair offers breathtaking view during the day and night!

Saratoga Springs and the Old Key West are also your go-to resorts for last minute bookings. They are almost always available and Saratoga Springs sits within easy walking distance of Disney Springs. We once booked a room at Saratoga on Nathan's birthday while house hunting in the Daytona Beach area, woke up to a wonderful Disney breakfast, and then headed out to look at houses. That is the DINK life.

We rang in Nathan's 40th birthday at Saratoga Springs. He got in an early morning run the next day. You can see Disney Springs across the lake and walk to it from the resort.

The Food: One of Our Biggest Reasons to Go

We love Disney because of the food. The dining across property is genuinely excellent and wildly underrated. As vegetarians, we know that every restaurant on property will have intentional plant-based options that are actually delicious, not just a salad. We love it so much that we will stay at our Westgate Town Center timeshare property and still make a Disney restaurant reservation just to go eat.

As a party of two, reservations are almost always easier to get than for larger groups. And we do not mind unconventional dining times. This past spring break we booked a reservation at the 'Ohana restaurant at the Polynesian Village Resort for 9:00p.m. because it was all they had. We were staying off property and it was our chance to get on property for the evening. What we did not know was that you can see the Magic Kingdom fireworks from 'Ohana and Disney pipes in the same music playing in the park during the show. We were completely caught off guard. Even after all the time we have spent at Disney it still finds ways to surprise you.

Resort Hopping: The Free Dinner Reservation Strategy

Book a dining reservation at a Disney resort restaurant and you can park at that resort for free. From there you have full access to Disney transportation and the entire resort ecosystem. This is one of the best ways to experience Disney magic without a park ticket, and as DINKs with no stroller to fold and no nap to race home for, it is completely effortless.

Our four favorite routes:

The Monorail Loop: Book at the Grand Floridian, Polynesian, or Contemporary and ride between all three. During the holidays the Christmas trees at each resort are individually themed and the Grand Floridian does elaborate chocolate Easter eggs at Easter that are works of art.

The chocolate easter egg display during the spting at The Grand Floridian is so cool (and free)!

The Boardwalk Area: Book at any Boardwalk restaurant and explore the Boardwalk, Beach Club, and Yacht Club. The Christmas decorations there are absolutely killer.

Gingerbread house displays to celebrate the holidays at the Boardwalk Inn

The Skyliner Route: We love Sebastian's at Caribbean Beach Resort so we book dinner there, park free, then ride the Skyliner over to the Riviera and walk around, then ride all the way down to Pop Century Resort and the Art of Animation Resort. The nostalgia hits hard at those two resorts. The Skyliner itself is one of the most underrated experiences on all of Disney property.

Alicia, waiting outside of Sebastian's with the Skyliner behind her at sunset. Gorgeous.

The Sassagoula River Cruise: Book dinner at Olivia's at Old Key West and take the free riverboat through Old Key West, Saratoga Springs, Port Orleans French Quarter, and Port Orleans Riverside all the way to Disney Springs. Port Orleans Riverside has an enormous arcade. French Quarter has Mickey-shaped beignets at Scat Cat's Club - Cafe. The whole evening costs nothing beyond your dinner.

The River Cruise is so gorgeous and for us, until recently, was a hidden gem.

Disney Springs and EPCOT: Two More DINK Favorites

Disney Springs is completely free: free parking, free admission, great food, great shopping, seasonal events, live music, and scavenger hunts. The DVC members lounge there is a wonderful perk where you can grab a free coffee or snack, get out of the heat, and sit in a beautiful space.

Alicia making herself at home at the model unit at the DVC lounge at Disney Springs.

EPCOT is our favorite Disney park. World Showcase is wonderful even on a non-festival day. The attractions most people walk past are some of our favorites: Living With the Land, Finding Nemo, the Mexico Gran Fiesta Tour, the Beauty and the Beast sing-along, and the American Adventure. Short waits and genuinely rich experiences.

The festivals are where EPCOT becomes a DINK paradise. Food and Wine, Festival of the Arts, Flower and Garden, Festival of the Holidays. Walking World Showcase with a drink in hand, sampling food from a dozen different countries, listening to live music with no schedule and nowhere to be. A dedicated festival episode is coming because each deserves its own conversation.

We love ECPOT. This was taken during the Festival of the Arts.

Quick DINK Advantages at Disney

  • Spontaneity: go where you want, when you want, stay as late as you feel like
  • Resort guests get early park entry before the crowds
  • Free water park ticket on your first resort stay: we did a couple of easy hours at Blizzard Beach last summer
  • Table for two reservations are almost always easier to get than for larger parties
  • Memory Maker photos: the photographers are everywhere and the results are great
  • DVC membership, annual passes, and the Chase Disney Visa all come with discounts that stack
  • EV chargers at Disney parks and Disney Springs, available without a premium price
We loved all of the special celebrations for Disney World's 50th Anniversary a few years back.

How We Got Back to SeaWorld: The Foot Golf Origin Story

Several years ago we were playing FootGolf at a Disney golf course. The course marshal, after gently informing us that foot golf has tee times just like regular golf, mentioned that if we loved the EPCOT festivals we would absolutely love what SeaWorld does with their festivals. We were genuinely surprised. We went. The rest is history.

FootGolf!! It is exactly what it sounds like and so much fun!

SeaWorld is a completely different value proposition from Disney and that is a wonderful thing. As a Florida teacher Nathan gets a free educator pass. Alicia bought a silver annual pass that includes free parking. After two or three visits the pass has paid for itself entirely and there is zero pressure to do everything or stay all day. That zero pressure mentality changes everything.

We do not go for the rides. We go for the atmosphere, the animal shows, the shopping, and the festivals. The Seven Seas Food Festival is fantastic and the annual pass tasting lanyard is one of the best kept secrets in Orlando: passholders get extra free tastings on top of the included ones, and the portions are often full size rather than small samples. The drinks also tend to run larger than what you get at Disney festivals.

The portions are huge at the SeaWorld festivals!

One honest note for our vegetarian and plant-based readers: SeaWorld has fewer options than Disney. You will find things to enjoy, but go in with that expectation.

Aquatica: The Only Water Park with a Fun River

Aquatica is SeaWorld's water park and it is the only water park in Florida with what Alicia calls the "fun river." Roa's Rapids is a high-energy action river with strong currents that whips you through twists and turns, and it is genuinely the most fun she has ever had at a water park. There is also a calm lazy river, two wave pools, and an 80,000 square foot white sand beach.

Aquatica can often be added to the SeaWorld annual pass for almost nothing or even free during certain promotions. Always check the combo option before you buy.

Traveling with Peppermint Patty

Our dog Peppermint Patty, also known as P2, travels with us whenever we can make it work. Our dogs and cats alwasy have! Disney has made that easier than most people realize.

Peppermint Patty loved her Pluto welcome package!

Four Disney resorts are currently dog-friendly: Art of Animation, Port Orleans Riverside, Yacht Club Resort, and Fort Wilderness Resort. Dog guests receive a Pluto's Welcome Kit at check-in and rooms are near designated green spaces. The pet fee runs roughly $75 per night. P2 stayed at the Yacht Club over Labor Day weekend last year and was treated wonderfully. The Boardwalk walk area made it easy and convenient.

We are staying at the Fort Wilderness Cabins for a full week in June with P2 in tow. It is the only DVC property that currently allows dogs and one of the most naturally beautiful spots on Disney property.

We are looking forward to staying at the cabins and looking at this lake later this year at Fort Wilderness!

For stays at non-pet-friendly resorts, Best Friends Pet Center at Disney is our go-to. On Disney property, staffed 24/7, with options from standard boarding to a Luxury Suite with webcam, flat screen TV, private patio, and premium bedding. We used it during our Old Key West stay and could visit and walk P2 throughout the day. We also use it whenever we are flying out of Orlando or staying at any non-pet-friendly property in the area.

Best Friends treats Peppermint Patty like she is family!

SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa also offer on-site day-use kennels for guests who cannot get back to their hotel during the day. Busch Gardens is air-conditioned, staffed park hours, and runs about $25 per day or $10 for pass members. SeaWorld has a similar setup. We have used both.

Beyond Disney and SeaWorld

Disney and SeaWorld are our two deepest examples in this episode but the philosophy applies everywhere. Busch Gardens Tampa, Disneyland, Florida state parks (our your state's), national parks, resort towns like Branson and Gatlinburg and Myrtle Beach, zoos and aquariums, Westgate Resorts, and family cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, which Alicia has sailed, and the Disney Cruise Line, which is absolutely on our list. All of these are marketed to families. All of them have an incredible DINK experience inside them waiting to be discovered.

The question is never whether these places are for people like us. The question is what do we get to do once we are there and how do we make it ours. These places are for everyone. And as DINKs, we would argue we get some of the best of what they have to offer.
